WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE DIES
When ever and where ever someone passes away, Nielsen Funerals are available
24 hours a day and the sooner we are contacted the sooner we can assist you.
The first call to us will enable us to make arrangements for the transfer of your loved one into our care from the place of death, following this we would make an appointment to sit down and discuss the funeral arrangements at a time that best suits the family.
To get an idea of the details we will discuss and the questions you will be asked during this arrangement meeting click here.
You can be assured that once your loved one has been transferred into our care they will receive the highest level of care, dignity and respect.
When someone passes away at a Hospital
When someone passes away at a Hospital the doctors and nurses present will arrange for the completion of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
Once this certificate has been completed we are then able to transfer your loved one
into our care. Hospitals will usually leave it to the family to contact the funeral director, we would suggest that you notify us at your earliest convenience so that we can liaise with the Hospital and make arrangements for the transfer as soon as possible.
When someone passes away at a Nursing Home
When someone passes away at a Nursing Home a doctor or registered nurse will arrange for a Verification of Death to be completed. Once this standard and legal procedure has taken place and any family, who wish to do so, have been given the opportunity to attend, the Nursing Home will contact us to arrange for the immediate transfer into our care, this transfer can take place at any hour of the day or night.
Nielsen Funerals will then arrange for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to be completed by the usual doctor.
As part of the admission paperwork the Nursing Home will usually ask you to specify a preferred funeral director in the event of death, by completing this earlier it will relieve any additional stress at the time of death.
When someone passes away at Home
When someone passes away at home and the death has been expected, you will need to contact the palliative care nurse (if under their care) or doctor, the doctor or registered district nurse will then complete a Verification of Death.
Once this standard and legal procedure has taken place and any family, who wish to do so, have been given the opportunity to attend, you can then contact Nielsen Funerals at any hour of the day or night. We would then make arrangements for the transfer of your loved one from the home into our care.
Nielsen Funerals will then arrange for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to be completed by the usual doctor.
When someone passes away at home and the death is sudden or unexpected and the doctor is not able to sign a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death the police will arrange for the transfer into the care of the State Coroner who will need to establish the cause of death. The family then contact Nielsen Funerals and we will liaise with the Coroners and arrange for the transfer back into our care.
When the death is Sudden or Unexpected
When someone passes away unexpectedly or as the result of an accident or suicide the deceased is transferred to the State Coroner (located in Southbank, Melbourne) who will establish the cause and circumstances of death.
The family should contact Nielsen Funerals as soon as possible, we can then liaise with the Coroners and eventually arrange for the transfer back into our care.
Although we cannot finalise the day and time of the funeral until we have a final clearance from the Coroners, we can discuss all other funeral arrangements.
When someone passes away Interstate, Overseas or Away From Home
